I feel like this audience never understands others sense of humour, especially the British/Australian/kiwi. There"s no denying Jojo Rabbit is a clever piece of cinema. It takes the hysteria surrounding Nazism in Germany in WWII and subverts it, by focusing its idiocy through a lens of everyday, normalcy.
Hatred of Jews with absurd caricatures and his rumours. Beatles like hysteria over the Fuhrer, who is idolised by the main character to the point of becoming an imaginary friend. The bizarre rituals and militarised games played by Hitler Youth are all brought into focus. Its nutty stuff and skewed from this angle, often quite funny, as insightful satire should be.
That"s not to say this is entirely new. Charlie Chaplin"s The Great Dictator did it first and in a general sense, did it better. Indeed, this film does have its shortcomings. Chief of which, is its retrospective moral outrage, over the treatment of the Jews. As my mother, who lived through WWII noted years ago, everyone was sorry after the fact but not sorry enough at the time, to do anything meaningful about it.
Suffice to say, it would have been better, I feel, to look more into the character of the young Jewish girl hiding in the families home, presenting her as a human being first and foremost. This would have said more, than moral angst ever could.
A little disappointed too to see yet more anti Russian sentiment. The Russians did not typically execute prisoners, only those found guilty of war crimes. Many did die in captivity but that happened in US and Soviet custody.
That said, what this film does demonstrate in a innocently funny but also very sad way, is how Nazism effected children. Something that is often overlooked, when visiting this period of history.
Suffice to say there"s a lot to like here. This films funny, sad, likeable, down to earth, and a bit zany. For me a must watch.

It"s a very heart warming story of a young boy who is struggling with his identity in Nazi Germany. The film itself has a good depth of story. If you"re coming into this expecting more comedy than drama, you may be disappointed. I personally feel the acting within the film leaves you admiring the cast, as they portray their characters well enough. This story has a heavy emphasis on love and identity. Almost every character in JoJo Rabbit has some element of trying to understand themselves in their day-to-day life, which adds an element of realism to the film. I feel there are good lessons in the film that warrant watching it. The movie is also a tear-jerker. I recommend recognizing that before going in. If you"re watching this movie for a lot of laughs, you may find yourself underwhelmed though there is some comedic parts to it, but the underlying moral principles and self-actualization of each character is profoundly demonstrated. Definitely a movie for those who love a good story with character depth.

I feel like theres some sins to be tallied for the irregularities in the “every 90 years thing”. like how does pelle have a picture of “last years may queen” if it only happens every 90 years? and how would his parents have burnt up in a fire if hes like 20. There is no plot, no story, no character journey, no conflict, nothing. Thigs just happen. And then it ends.
At the beginning you get a vibe of a crazy overly attached girlfriend but you still give her the benefit of the doubt, considering she just went through a horrific situation. So you expect something to come out of that horrible trauma. And it doesn"t happen. The matter is just forgotten. You get over 2 hours of people dancing around, getting high, making weird noises, and some terribly poor atempts of being serious. And all you can do is laugh when the movie is trying to be in its most serious moments.
I only gave it one star beacause we can"t give zeros here. But still I think I would give this a 1/10 just for the male nude scenes. Yep, we get full male frontal nudity here. That"s the only good thing I can point out of this bunch of trash.

“But, Jimmy, we not gon STORE the muthafucka…” ??. As Tarantino states, its not confusing. You have to watch it but thats all he asks. And if you do you"ll become embroiled with the most self reflexive film around. Cluttered with inter textual references to pop culture e.g pilots,Marilyn Monroe,Fonzie etc Tarantinos sublimely definitive post modern film highlights its artifice and as such we are suckered in.
While the prudish may squirm at a "immature celebration of violence" I personally applaud the profound approach of Tarantino presenting us with such outlandishly gruesome violence (pieces of brain etc) that we can do nothing but laugh. And for that reason. It"s not realism. Nor does it try to be. On the contrary the surreal is celebrated here. You need only watch the scene involving Butch"s selection of weapons in a standard corner store (a hammer, a chainsaw, a samurai sword) to realise Tarantino"s playful homage to some of his favourite genres isn"t halted by a reductive realist approach.
While the narrative is a little disorientating on times, the beauty of it is that the audience become involved in the film more-so; it"s their task to piece everything together. An interactive movie if you will. Tarantino being a film buff clutters his film with homage to some of his favourites. The dancing sequence involving Travolta evokes such nostalgia among movie fans for his roles in Greace and Saturday Night Fever, though is originally a nod to Jean Luc Godard for his approach of just stopping the film in full flow for a musical sequence. The briefcase with the light inside echos that of Kiss Me Deadly; a classical noir while Walkens tale regarding the watch mirrors the character from The Deer Hunter who was captured in Vietnam.
On to performance. Travolta an unlikely choice at the time people forget does wonderfully well as our on screen stand in. He"s constantly behind what"s happening (the motif of events changing dramatically with every visit Vincent makes to the toilet is one often mentioned)and plays catch up alongside us since the narrative is so ridiculously spontaneous spinning off in unexpected directions(who on earth would have seen a rape scene ensue from Butch and Marcellus storyline, or Mias unexpected O.D- that wasn"t on the cards was it. Jackson is the man as always playing Mr Cool here perfectly and Willis already a household name by this point brings credibility to the film, all the same his segment of the film is my least favourite. Possibly because of the playful immature banter between the two supposedly professional hit-man is just too funny. I just love the fact that in Tarantinos world, two dangerous murderers are brought down to bickering school children, scared to death of the thought of Jimmys wife arriving home. Not of the police, but of Jimmys wife. Surreal, but thats the beauty of this film. Simply has to be watched. One of the best films you"ll see. I love Inglorious Basterds but i cant decide whether it tops Pulp Fiction. Either way both are amazing. Watch this film.
